From the late 1970s, ‘embroidery’ as a term was gradually replaced by ‘textile art’. 37 Janet Ledsham, who was teaching and making work throughout this period, remembers the word ‘embroidery’ being ‘the anathema’. The Ulster Folk Museum has an exemplary historical collection but the collection and programming does not extend to contemporary textiles and, hard as it is to believe, there is no permanent textile gallery. This is a beautifully presented book, packed with beautiful projects, using beautiful colours, beautiful threads!

The relationship between outwork for the linen industry and contemporary textile art seemed too tenuous, too remote.
